Reviews:

Cynthia is a campy delight with the most hideously adorably creature ever made. It is really a perfect storm of different horror elements. The film has a fantastic cast, superb creature design, and it is hilarious. The only downside to the film is some of the medical scenes and terminology are off, but since the rest of the film involves a strange baby-creature these inaccuracies are easy to overlook.” The Blogging Banshee!

“If you’ve seen movies like Basket CaseIt’s Alive or Braindead (aka Dead Alive), you might have an idea where this one’s going to go. It’s funny as hell and even gorier and there are some fantastic turns from an all-star genre cast, including one memorable performance by Bill Moseley in drag as a crazy homeless woman called Buttercup.” Hal Astell, Nerdvana

Schlock – USA, 1971

‘A love stranger than King Kong’

Schlock – aka The Banana Monster – is a 1971 American comedy horror feature film, written, directed by and starring John Landis (Burke & Hare; Innocent Blood; Michael Jackson’s ThrillerAn American Werewolf in London). It was one of Rick Baker’s first makeup jobs.

The $60,000 movie was released in March 1973 by Jack H. Harris Enterprises (Equinox; The Blob and sequel).

Schlock will be released on Blu-ray on October 16, 2018, via Arrow Video. It has been restored in 4K from the original camera negative and features the original lossless mono soundtrack. Read further down for details.

Schlockthropus is a prehistoric apeman who falls in love with a teenage blind beauty and terrorises her Southern California suburb. Schlock is no ordinary simian as he possesses some very unusual skills. Among other things, he plays the piano and gives TV interviews…

Reviews:

“The jokes essentially stop coming about 20 minutes into the 80-minute Banana Monster, giving the last hour or so a palpable we’re-making-this-shit-up-as-we-go-along vibe, but anyone looking for nothing more than a film in which John Landis runs around in a monkey suit for 80 minutes won’t likely be disappointed.” Nathan Rabin, AV Club

“There are also some fun ideas (I love the TV newsman who hosts a “guess the body count” contest), and its heart is certainly in the right place. On the down side, the movie is unfocused; it has the bare minimum of a plot, and many of the scenes feel like random events placed in a random order.” Dave Sindelar, Fantastic Movie Musings and Ramblings

“When the humor lands, this movie can be hilarious, but in those slower sections, Schlock drags on and that grinds the fun to a halt. I think there’s more good than bad here though, with a lot of fun nods to classic b movies and such an offbeat, unpredictable atmosphere, so for me, this one is easily recommended.” Marc Fusion

“the energy and the creativity on display make this work, and credit where it’s due, that monkey suit is really nicely done (it’s no surprise that Baker went on to become one of the best in the effects business). This isn’t Landis’ best movie, nor his funniest, but for a first effort it’s pretty damned entertaining.” Ian Jane, Rock! Shock! Pop!

” …this writer found himself staring at the clock on multiple occasions. This film immediately gained a cult following when released in 1973, and seems to bare its fair share of fans to this day. It was far too unfunny, foolish, and uninterestingly to gain much praise from myself.” Chris Mayo, Severed Cinema

Cast and characters:

  • John Landis … Schlock
  • Saul Kahan … Detective Sgt. Wino
  • Joseph Piantadosi … Ivan
  • Richard Gillis … Officer Gillis
  • Tom Alvich … Torn Cop
  • Walter Levine … Police Thief
  • Eric Allison … Joe Putzman
  • Ralph Baker … Dying Man
  • Gene Fox … Billy
  • Susan Weiser-Finley … Betty
  • Jonathan A. Flint … Bobby
  • Amy Schireson … Barbara
  • Belinda Folsey … Goria
  • Emile Hamaty … Professor Shlibovitz
  • Harriet Medin [credited as Enrica Blankey] … Mrs. Blinerman

Release:

Schlock will be released on Blu-ray on October 16, 2018, via Arrow Video. It has been restored in 4K from the original camera negative and features the original lossless mono soundtrack.

Graham Humphreys designed the new cover art, while the original poster will be on the reverse side.

‘Sometimes you get the munchies… sometimes they get you!’

Eat Me! is a 2009 American comedy horror feature film directed by directed by Katie Carman from a screenplay by Elizabeth Lee who also stars. The Cold Hands Productions movie also stars Jun Naito, Ivy Hong, and Chesley Calloway.

A Brooklyn garage band, General Malacarne, survives a radioactive event and have to battle against zombies to what they believe is the safe haven of Long Island…

Reviews:

” …the make-up jobs on the zombies seemed to vary quite a bit, some looked great and others were lacking. The continuity of the film is fairly simple; the group makes decisions based on (stoner) logic and reason for the most part.  I felt the film never really climaxed and that we were just dragged though step by step until they came to a poor conceived resolution.” Dano Casas, Buy Zombie

“There are some genuinely creepy and tense moments as well as some very original ideas. Acting is good all round with solid characters who are neither interchangeable nor obnoxious. Overall the film looks a lot better than its minuscule budget would suggest…” Trevor Menham, Full on Fear

Eat Me! is a film made by people who want to make films, who possess the drive and motivation just to go out and get started and that must be admired. Slightly rough around the edges and in need of a little polish this is still a film that will entertain right up until the strangely abrupt ending. John Townsend, The Horror Asylum

“For its inventiveness, Calloway’s great performance, and the commendable production values, Eat Me! is a zombie comedy movie that I hope finds an audience. It may not satisfy your hunger for a big, gory zombie spectacle, but it has a lot going for it to satisfy your other zombie cravings.” Aaron Allen, The Zed Word

Hard Rock Zombies – 1984

‘You can’t keep a good band down’

Hard Rock Zombies is a 1985 American comedy horror feature film directed by Krishna Shah from a screenplay co-written with David Allen Ball. The movie stars E.J. Curse, Geno Andrews, Sam Mann, Mick McMains, Lisa Toothman, Jennifer Coe, Ted Wells, and Jack Bliesener.

In the small town of Grand Guignol, four members of a rock band are electrocuted to death by a bizarre woman and her strange family. Knowing that their fans are dying to see them, none of the band members is about to let a stupid thing like death stop them from putting on their concert, so they rise from the grave and give the greatest concert of their lives…

Reviews:

” …the film never takes itself very seriously, which is good, because there’s nothing about it that anyone could ever take seriously. But there’s no relevant theme to the film at all, because Shah jumps all over the place; the town of Grand Guignol (very subtle) has werewolves and Nazis and Hitler and zombies and demons, all at once, and it’s so oddball and wacky that it’s tough to concentrate on the real plot of the story.” Ryne Barber, Horror News

“Its title only describes a small portion of the plot, a bit of a misdirection play that belies the madness within. Though at times it fits within the hard rock horror cycle, to find an analogue for Hard Rock Zombies requires you to look one or more decades past its 1985 release, when its aesthetic pastiche and non-sequitur humor would fully come into vogue.” David Carter, Not Coming to a Theater Near You

” …like an extended drum solo, there’s lots of unnecessary padding. But it’s not just filler with no killer. It’s an entertaining mess which culminates in all the zombified characters (pretty much everyone in the film) dancing and rocking out together. It’s also a nice remnant of an era when people took themselves just a little less seriously and amps went all the way up to 11.” Really Awful Movies

“The height of hilarity here are a town called Grand Guignol (Ho, ho), a cute Psycho shower scene gag, and a Satanic musical finale (is that the dreaded ‘Tri-tone’ being played?) that is kinda amusing but not as much as it should be […] with the Metal vs. Morality debate stuff being especially pointless here. I get what it’s a reference to but it takes forever for it to be even remotely integrated into the main plot.” Ryan McDonald, Shameless Self Expression

“The sort of film where someone asks a severed head “Omigawd! Are you all right?” the music (by Paul Sabu) might have redeemed it, but every time they break for a song it’s soft rock at best and miles from grit yer teeth metal. A complete mess, but bizarre enough to lodge itself in the unsuspecting mind.” Graeme Clark, The Spinning Image

” …one of those movies that’s so bad it’s good… or almost good in this particular case, because it has a fatal flaw. It doesn’t take itself seriously, and the creators obviously knew they were making an incredibly goofy movie (with a werewolf grandma, midgets, zombies, and Hitler, how could they not?), and this sense of fun greatly helps the movie along.” Steve Miller, Terror Titans

Hard Rock Zombies is a blatantly stupid movie that is so cheesy that it’s hard to actually enjoy. At least with Troma movies, there’s a tongue in cheek campiness that makes them fun, but here the jokes are so desperate that they make Troma seem dignified. I mean you know you’re in trouble when the main villain is revealed to be Adolf Hitler.” Mitch Lovell, The Video Vacuum

“The plot is slight and the thrills driven by adolescent concerns, but the variations on the usual zombie motifs are more innovative than in most of the camp zombie flicks to follow over the next decade. Strange moments abound, such as a zombie dwarf who, through the course of the movie, devours himself entirely go nothingness.” Peter Dendle, The Zombie Movie Encyclopedia, McFarland

‘You only die once… so make sure it’s live!’

Clickbait is a 2018 American comedy horror feature film directed by Sophia Cacciola and Michael J. Epstein from a screenplay by the latter and Jeremy Long. The Launch Over production stars Amanda Colby Stewart, Brandi Aguilar, Seth Chatfield, Ryan James Hilt and Ikaika Jonathan.

A college student who will do just about anything for internet fame is kidnapped by a fan, and her reluctant roommate is the only one who can save her…

Clickbait premieres at the GenreBlast film festival at the Alamo Drafthouse in Winchester, Virginia on September 1, 2018.

Reviews:

“…a strong undercurrent of biting social commentary presented in a satirical manner. Everything from social media to corporate sponsorship to instant celebrity to the corruption of law enforcement and government is well and duly skewered. But fret not, because while these themes are being explored, there is a true reverence to our beloved horror biz on display as well (especially for the slasher and giallo genres).” Horror Fuel

Director’s statement:

Great horror films find ways to create physical manifestations of abstract fears and anxieties. Modern popularity culture imposes a certain pressure on younger people to create complex, performative identities, and to fearlessly face the consequences of the resulting fracturing of their self-image.

We wanted to create a “monster” that manifested from those performative pressures, and one that is actually fed and brought to life by every character in the movie inadvertently. We hoped to depict the different types of personas people take on in social-media forums, and the impossible reconciliations they face.

We hope you will find these circumstances tragic and sympathize with the victims who have this vapidity thrust upon them, rather than viewing the participants as themselves vapid. We do not wish the film to be a condemnation of millennials, so much as a condemnation of the way that they have been commoditized by Facebook, Google, and other Internet giants.

Nightmare Beach – Italy/USA, 1988

Nightmare Beach – aka Welcome to Spring Break – is a 1988 Italian-American slasher horror feature film directed by Umberto Lenzi (Cannibal Ferox; Nightmare CityEyeball) as Harry Kirkpatrick from a screenplay co-written with Vittorio Rambaldi. The movie stars starring Nicolas de Toth, Sarah Buxton, John Saxon, and Michael Parks.

Diablo, leader of a  motorcycle gang known as the Demons, is being executed for the murder of a young woman. Confronting the victim’s sister Gail (Sarah Buxton), he proclaims his innocence and vows to return before being killed via electric chair.

A year later, at the annual Spring Break celebrations in Miami, two football players, Skip (Nicolas de Toth) and Ronny (Rawley Valverde) are amongst the partygoers for the week-long festivities.

While Spring Break is occurring, a mysterious biker appears and begins to kill people. The back of his bike has a lever that when pulled (combined with a button pushed by the biker) causes the victim to undergo a treatment similar to the electric chair…

Nightmare Beach is released on Blu-ray in the UK on October 22 by 88 Films.

Review:

Did Umberto Lenzi direct the 1988 film, Nightmare Beach?

That’s a question that Italian horror fans have been debating for a while now. The film’s credited director is Harry Kirkpatrick. Due to the fact that Kirkpatrick has no other known credits, it’s generally agreed that Kirkpatrick was a pseudonym. But was it a pseudonym for Lenzi, screenwriter James Justice, or both of them? In an interview for the book Spaghetti Nightmares, Lenzi said that he was originally hired to direct but, at the last minute, he changed his mind because he felt the film was too similar to his 1972 giallo, Seven Blood-Stained Orchids. Lenzi says that he withdrew from directing but that he remained on set to provide technical assistance to the film’s actual director, “Harry Kirkpatrick,” who Lenzi also says co-wrote the script. That may sound simple enough but sceptics point out that worrying about repeating himself didn’t dissuade Lenzi from following up Eaten Alive! with Cannibal Ferox. (Add to that, would Lenzi really have been concerned about duplicating a film that he made seventeen years previously?)

As for what the film’s about, it’s a strange combination of genres. It starts out with a prisoner named Diablo (Tony Bolano) being sent to Florida’s electric chair. Diablo was the leader of an infamous motorcycle gang. He was convicted of murdering a teenage girl but, as he dies, Diablo yells that he’s been framed and that he was innocent.

However, no need to worry too much about Diablo! No sooner has Diablo been sent to the chair then suddenly, Nightmare Beach turns into a spring break comedy! Teenagers and college students are flooding the beaches of Florida and all they want to do is have a good time. The local fire-and-brimstone preacher (Lance Le Gault) can’t stop the party, no matter how many times he says that everyone’s going to Hell.  The police chief (John Saxon) puts extra patrols on the beach. The local doctor (Michael Parks) prepares to treat a hundred cases of alcohol poisoning.

The beach turns into a huge party!  Bands play. T-shirts get wet. For some reason, one dorky frat boy does the whole pretending to be dead while floating in the pool routine. A young woman tries to stay in a hotel for free without getting caught. Meanwhile, two college football players, Skip (Nicolas de Toth) and Ronny (Rawley Valverde) roll into town. Skip is depressed because he lost the big game but Ronny is determined that his best friend is going to have a good time and get laid! Whenever Skip gets depressed, Ronny pelts him with condoms. It’s Spring Break! Everyone’s going to have a good time…

Except, suddenly, a mysterious figure on a motorcycle rolls into town. He never speaks. He never takes off his helmet. However, he does electrocute everyone that he meets. Sometimes, he uses live wires and sometimes, he just has them sit on the back of his motorcycle, which has been designed to act as an electric chair.  Could it be the ghost of Diablo, seeking vengeance? When Ronny disappears – No! Not comedy relief Ronny – Skip is determined to find out what’s going on. Working with him is Gail (Sara Buxton), the sister of the girl that Diablo was convicted of murdering…

One reason why so many Italian horror aficionados are convinced that Umberto Lenzi must have directed Nightmare Beach is because, with its odd mix of genres and its weird combination of comedy and extreme gore, it just feels like an Umberto Lenzi film. Add to that, around the same time that Nightmare Beach was filmed and released, Lenzi also filmed and released another film about teenagers being murdered during spring break, Hitcher in the Dark.

Because it’s such a strange mix of genres, Nightmare Beach is a much more interesting film than Hitcher in the Dark. The motorcycle-driving killer is somehow both ludicrous and frightening at the same time. Plus, how can you resist a movie with both John Saxon and Michael Parks as ineffectual authority figures?  It just can’t be done.

Lisa Marie Bowman, HORRORPEDIA – An alternate version of this review appears on Through the Shattered Lens

Other reviews:

“While the Porky’s (or, more to the point, Spring Break) shenanigans are a bit at odds with the convoluted killer biker tale, never gelling into a cohesive whole, you could say that the film uniquely cuts back and forth between two totally separate exploitation genres.” Thomas Duke, Cinema Gonzo

“Even though Welcome to Spring Break is nowhere close to earning a place within the palaces of classic slasher cinema it undoubtedly deserves points for its enthusiasm of all things guilty and pleasurable, as well as its surprising capacity for replay value.” Digital Retribution

” …it manages to achieve a great balance of spring break stuff, like boobs and beer-drinking antics, with the wacky murder stuff! Put it this way: have you ever watched a teen sex comedy and about halfway through it thought “Ha ha, I wish somebody would start killing this bunch of goofs!” Well that’s exactly what happens in Welcome to Spring Break!” Ha, ha, It’s Burl!

” …the guessable killer gets a standard slasher movie speech lamenting the immorality of the modern age: “She was a lustful sinner, like these heathen invaders!”. The murders (mostly electrocutions) are largely bloodless, though you do get a couple of delightfully hokey blazing fake heads. Never dull and often hilarious…” Steven West, Horrorscreams Videovault

” …unabashed conflation of boobs and blood, a sex comedy movie that treats its characters like blow-up dolls to be punctured by a madman. If The Burning is a perfect blend of camp comedies and slashers, then this is its trashier, beachy counterpart.” Brett Gallman, Oh, the Horror!

” …there was a clear attempt through the assorted characters to keep things interesting. Unfortunately, they also seem to think that the appearance of effort is enough. Some of the subplot material is pure filler, while other pseudo-characters are pure meat, introduced just so they can be killed immediately afterwards.” Plate O’Shrimp

‘Only the blood of drug addicts can satisfy its thirst!’

Blood Freak is a 1972 American horror feature film, produced and directed by Brad F. Grinter (who also appears on screen as a narrator) and actor Steve Hawkes. It is “the world’s only turkey-monster-anti-drug-pro-Jesus gore film!”

blood freak

A biker comes upon a girl with a flat tire and offers her a ride home. He winds up at a drug party with the girl’s sister, then follows her to a turkey farm owned by her father, a mad scientist.

The father turns the biker into a giant turkey monster who goes after drug dealers….

Blood freak 2

Reviews:

“Peerless, disturbed, and completely stupid, it’s a glorification of all things crooked and perplexing in 70s exploitation films. The sheer concept (and series of events) baffles endlessly, making Grinter and friends’ seeming sincerity a trivial footnote.” Joseph A Ziemba, Bleeding Skull

“If you threw a Ron Ormond pro-Christian message flick, a nauseating H.G. Lewis gorefest, and an anti-pot PSA into a blender, Blood Freak would eventually pour into your glass. Sure, it’s an often-quoted cliche by now, but this movie is like nothing you’ve ever seen before! The acting’s appalling (Chesty Morgan deserves an Oscar compared to these people!), the production values ludicrously cheap, and the script is intensely stupid.” Casey Scott, DVD Drive-In

“What is this movie, then? Bad monster flick? Anti-drug scare film? Christian exploitation cinema? Low-budget mishmash or bad ideas? In truth, Blood Freak is all that and more. A bastard offspring of Herschel Gordon Lewis (and I must say some of the blood and gore effects in this film, particularly one where a guy gets his leg sawed off, are surprisingly effective given the utter incompetence of everything else on display) and Ron Ormond, Blood Freak is unlike anything else that’s ever been made—or ever will be made.” Trash Film Guru

“The acting, makeup and rock music soundtrack are all wonderfully horrible.” Michael Weldon, The Psychotronic Video Guide

“The question of how seriously this was intended lingers, though they don’t look self-aware enough to be implementing much savvy, leaving Blood Freak an endurance test, but a damned weird, at times hilarious, one.” Graeme Clark, The Spinning Image

“Are you a cinema masochist? Do you enjoy your C-movies chock full of atrocious acting, ludicrous plotting, and bargain basement production values? Do you demand your horror sleaze be punctuated by bumbling sex, little sophistication, and tons of hokey symbolism? Then this bird’s for you!” The Terror Trap

Freak Show

“What were Hawkes and Grinter thinking? With the pro-Christian elements, one has to wonder if they were really trying to put a positive message in this movie, while trying to make something “commercial”. But did they really think a movie with such poor production values could be commercial? That turkey head mask will have viewers screaming with laughter, not simply screaming.” The Unknown Movies

“This one belongs in the ‘so terrible it’s hilarious’ genre […] Contains some gore, 70s outfits, some female flesh, Christian preaching, and editing and dialog that would make Ed Wood cringe.” The Worldwide Celluloid Massacre

‘Terror has two dimensions!’

Camp Death III in 2D! is a 2018 Canadian comedy horror feature film written and directed by Matt Frame. The Frame Forty Films production stars Dave Peniuk, Angela Galanopoulos and Darren Andrichuk.

Camp Death III in 2D! a profoundly stupid and lewd comedy/horror parody of Friday the 13th Part III in 3D and is proudly presented in two dimensions.”

Reviews:

“My sense of humor runs toward the Kentucky Fried Movie variety as much as it does Mr. Show and SCTV, so I liked a lot of the jokes. You’ll also find more to like here the more 1980’s movies you’ve seen. It’s also completely unafraid to be beyond politically incorrrect in its humor, so if you’re easily offended, you might want to find another movie (or get a little more open minded).” Sam Panico, B&S About Movies

“A truly uproarious and at times silly slasher comedy, this one generates plenty of genuine laughs amongst it’s bloody outpouring of traditional slasher meldings that may or may not appeal to all out there. Only give this a chance if you’re appreciative of these silly, stupid parody style overt horror/comedies while anyone who doesn’t in the slightest should avoid wholeheartedly.” Don Anelli, Don’s World of Horror and Exploitation

Better Off Zed – USA, 2018

‘A relationship movie with bite’

Better Off Zed is a 2018 American comedy horror feature film produced and directed by Travis Stevens from a screenplay by Amy Tofte, based on Stevens’ storyline. The Butcher Bird Studios movie stars Christine Woods (The Walking Dead) and Graham Sibley.

For the last decade, Guy (Graham Sibley) has worked a mentally and physically demanding 60-hour week, a soul-crushing daily grind that has frayed his nerves; while his wife Paige (Christine Woods), a free spirit with multiple fine arts degrees to her name, has spent their marriage chasing creative inspiration.

When the zombie apocalypse arrives, Guy is ecstatic: no more grueling work, no more monotony, no more hopeless future. He spends his days in idyllic splendor, living life in the moment… while Paige snaps into survival mode and takes on the role of pragmatist, figuring out how to secure their perimeter and stretch out their food supply, while following news reports for any glimmer of hope that they might be able to escape. The couple – in essence – has switched places. And in this new dynamic, all of the small fissures pressured beneath the surface of their relationship finally crack open, forcing them to deal not only with Armageddon, but with a potentially far more horrifying reality… each other.

Better Off Zed is available through SP Releasing on iTunes, Amazon, DirectTV, GooglePlay, Sony PSN and other outlets throughout the USA.

Producer-director Travis Stevens has commented: “Using horror to highlight the humour, tenderness, trust, and tragedy in an isolated relationship is an exciting challenge. Zed is constructed around the idea of elevating the normal to the supernormal by replacing the humdrum nature of everyday stresses with the exciting and terrifying possibility of being eaten by zombies. Playing on established horror tropes and twisting them into sometimes scary, sometimes funny situations drives both characters and audience down a what-would-you-do-if-it-were-you path.

After coming up with the story idea, I looked for a talented woman writer that was excited to work on this script. The concept came from such a strong organic place from me (I was that daily grinding working just wishing the world would end so I could get some rest) that I wanted to be sure that it was balanced against an equally strong female voice could lend weight and credibility to the relationship.”

Reviews:

“Jack Frost isn’t a masterpiece, but it’s a fun piece of 90 minute fluff that will put a smile on your face. It’s a very entertaining B-movie if you happen to go in with low expectations and get the joke. A definitely guilty pleasure and worthy of an annual viewing during the Christmas season.” Full Moon Reviews

” …notable among ’90s movie fans for an appearance by a very young Shannon Elizabeth, who gets the most disturbing scene when she encounters Jack Frost in a bathtub and suffers a fate that wouldn’t look out of place in SuperVixens. The combination of brutal violence and yukity-yuk one liners isn’t something that will necessarily appeal to everybody, but if you’re on the right wavelength, it’s a pretty wild sleigh ride.” Nathaniel Thompson, Mondo Digital

“It’s admittedly one dumb joke stretched out over the course of a movie, but at least it’s got a lot of good punch lines in the form of some over-the-top kill sequences, which are almost always accompanied by some hideous one-liners (and Scott MacDonald’s gravely delivery makes Frost sound like a low-rent Charles Lee Ray).” Brett Gallman, Oh, the Horror!

jack-frost-1996

“The plot devices are sudden and convenient, and the special effects succeed through jarring close-ups, camera angles, and clever use of foam. I’m not saying there isn’t a little bit of pain for the viewer: the acting isn’t good, and the characters are mostly flat, but just about the time you begin rethinking this movie’s innate greatness, there comes another death scene, which will be a strange, wrong, hilarious thing.” Polyphobia Horror Film Reviews

“This is, for all intents and purposes, a dark comedy. But it works. Those expecting realism need not apply but if you can appreciate the novelty of a foul-mouthed snowman f*cking shit up in a small, picturesque town then the odds are pretty good that you’ll get a kick out of Jack Frost.” Ian Jane, Rock! Shock! Pop!

“There is some humor, but plenty of terrible one-liners and swing-and-miss attempts. It has some decent violence, but is hindered by a hilariously terrible snowman costume and awful effects. Is the movie good? No. Is it fun to watch. Sort of.” 365 Days of Horror Movies

jack-frost-1996-3

“The special effects are well anything but special, Styrofoam circles of differing sizes make for our Jack, and no attempt is made to make him look any better on the screen. Yet Jack Frost is a strangely captivating film, this is a horror for the south park generation, elaborate over the top kills and plenty of laughs along the way.” Mark Pidgeon, UK Horror Scene

jack-frost-1996-4

“When Jack starts shooting icicle daggers from his body to gleefully kill, I found it difficult to keep watching. Cooney loses his street-cred completely at this point, making Jack Frost a movie for people interested in novelty killings more than coherent story-telling or characterizations.” JM Cozzoli, Zombos Closet of Horror

Nekrotonic – Australia, 2018

Nekrotonic is 2018 Australian science fiction comedy horror feature film directed by Kiah Roache-Turner from a screenplay co-written with Tristan Roache-Turner (Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead). The movie stars Monica Bellucci, Ben O’Toole, Caroline Ford and Tess Haubrich.

Sanitation worker Howard (Ben O’Toole) discovers that he is actually a powerful necromancer who must stop the Queen of the Demons (Monica Bellucci) from consuming 1.3 million souls via a network of Nekropod power boxes in a giant pentagram around the city…

Reviews:

“Where the film falters, or the component that most dampens its enthusiastically juvenile appeal, is the formulaic plot. Bellucci is a campy villain and her internet domination plans are beyond silly, but the accidental white hetero saviour who swoops in the save the day (at the expense of the far more qualified female protagonists no less) is at best too familiar and at worst frustratingly reductive.” Joe Lipsett, Bloody Disgusting

” …while it very much looks like a B-movie, it looks like a B-movie with a budget. The visuals are also very vibrant and filled with more colour than Wyrmwood, which is justification for a more riotous feeling — and the really bad jokes support that spirit. But the ultimate reason to sit through this very boring, exhaustive assault on the senses is for Monica Bellucci. She chews scenery whether it’s for the benefit of comedy or horror; no one else comes close.” Christopher Cross, Goomba Stomp

” …nobody that sees Nekrotronic will expect it to be anything more than ridiculous fun. Roache-Turner delivers on that end, and shows that he has the potential to become a great director. There are some pieces still missing from the film, especially in the storytelling, that hold it back. Despite its flaws, it’s still entertaining throughout its whole running time.” Anthony Le, Keithlovesmovies

” …there’s virtually nothing here to wholeheartedly (or even partially) connect to, with the lack of any real stakes certainly preventing one from working up any real interest in or sympathy for the protagonist’s ongoing endeavors. The endless, special-effects-heavy climax ensures that Nekrotronic concludes with a whimper…” David Nusair, Reel Film Reviews

‘It was what they eat’

Creature from Cannibal Creek is a 2018 Canadian comedy horror feature film written and directed by John Migliore (Exorcism of the Dead; Poltergeist Encounters; The Friday Night Death Slot). The Survival Zombie Films production stars Deborah Jayne Reilly Smith, Simon Wheeldon, Jim Ordolis, Lena Montecalvo and John Migliore. There are also cameo appearances by filmmakers Brett Kelly (GhastliesMy Fair Zombie; Jurassic Shark)  and Sébastien Godin (Lycanimator).

A group of cannibals keep people in cages until they’re ready to be butchered. One of the captives escapes but dies in the surrounding forest. Nature soon takes a hand, reviving the former captive and turning him into a marauding beast…

Director-writer John Migliore: “I wanted the first trailer for Creature from Cannibal Creek to capture the heart of the film, while also reflecting back on what influenced us to make this kind of movie. I’m a huge fan of horror movies in general, but films from the 1970s have alway held a special magic for me.”

The movie is currently in post-production.

‘Step right up and die!’

CarousHeLL is a 2016 American comedy horror feature film directed by Steve Rudzinski (Red Christmas; Everyone Must DieBasic Slaughter) from a screenplay co-written with Aleen Isley. The movie stars Steve Rimpici, Sé Marie, Haley Madison and Christopher Proud.

A sentient carousel unicorn is pushed too far by a brat.  The unicorn breaks free from his spinning merry-go-round prison and goes on a revenge-driven murder spree on his way to kill the kid…

CarousHELL is due for release in 2019 from Wild Eye Releasing.

Reviews:

“Once the novelty of a Duke killing people wears off it gets repetitive. Even the gimmick of Duke somehow producing all manner of weapons wears thin quick. The rest of the cast are annoying and ridiculously over the top, the kind of characters you want to see killed. For those who just want to see a stream of bloody deaths this could do the job. ” Jim Morazzini, Beneath the Underground

CarousHELL is the funniest horror comedy of 2016, as well as most brilliantly bizarre – and it is further proof that underground horror is well worth scouring, for it is there you shall unearth many hidden gems, some of which might even have unicorn sex.” Kieran Fisher, Dread Central

“The two things that this oddball gem has going for it is a script that is actually funny when the conceit begins to fray, and the absolute conviction that the entire cast and crew have to the joke. The script by Rudzinski and co-writer Aleen Isley is broad, surreal and ludicrously silly.” Norman Gidney, Horror Buzz

“There was a few kills that looked way bigger than the budget would normally allow.  My hat is off to the effects team for those but there was a few that threw me off. A different camera angle should have been used.  Overall, CarousHELL is exactly what the horror community needs.  It has laughs, blood, unicorn sex, and one hell of a cast. ” Horror Society
